In 2018 Ford introduced the 3.0L V6 Powerstroke as the first diesel engine to be used for their F-150 series trucks. This engine was based off the Ford Lion engine used in Land Rovers overseas, but also shares many features with the bigger 6.7L V8 Powerstroke. The 3.0L Powerstroke was designed to provide F-150 owners a durable, reliable, and fuel-efficient engine option. For the 2018 model year, the Ford F-150s underwent a mid-cycle redesign featuring an updated grille and new powertrain options. These F-150’s had many different upgrades to aid in their increased engine efficiency including an aluminum body, variable-geometry turbocharger, and a high-pressure common-rail fuel system. When designing the 3.0L Powerstroke, fuel economy was one of the major focuses; Ford estimated this engine could provide up to 30 miles per gallon on the highway.
