The Gearhead Hydra Custom Tunes (ghacht) are custom-written tune files for the PHP (Power Hungry Performance) Hydra chip on 1994-1999 and 1999.5-2003 Ford 7.3L Powerstroke trucks. Each tune set is written specifically for your truck - injector size, turbo, HPOP modifications, transmission, tire size, and gear ratio are all factored in. Seven tune files cover heavy towing, street performance, economy, idle management, and all-out power. Tunes are emailed within 48 hours and loaded using the free PHP software. Early 1999 is not supported. Custom tuning is non-refundable.

Custom-Written vs Generic Tune Files

Generic tune files are written to a baseline spec and may not account for injector nozzle size, HPOP condition, built transmission behavior, or non-stock axle and tire combinations. The Gearhead Hydra custom tunes are written specifically for the truck's actual build - not a close approximation. That distinction matters most on modified trucks where a mismatched tune can limit power, increase smoke, or push EGTs in the wrong direction.

For a stock 7.3L with no modifications, generic files may be adequate. For any truck with modified injectors, a larger turbo, HPOP work, a built trans, or non-stock gearing, a build-specific tune is the correct path. Boost foolers must be removed with this programming - confirm that before ordering.

7.3L Powerstroke Tune File Descriptions

Seven default tune files are included, written for the truck's specific build. Available for 1994-1999 (late) and 1999.5-2003 single shot injector applications:

• Heavy Tow - Towing up to the truck's capacity with better fuel economy than stock
• High Idle - Aids warm-up, supports heavy electrical demand, and improves AC performance during extended idling
• Stealth - Quiet idle mode for drive-throughs; not intended for extended driving or prolonged idling
• Tow/Economy - Approximately 40 HP over stock; towing up to approximately 10,000 lbs with EGT monitoring recommended above 7,000 lbs on long hills
• Street Muscle - 80-100 HP over stock; approximately 1,300 degrees max EGT with an exhaust and intake installed
• Street Fury (stock injectors only) - Extra passing power and stoplight performance; EGT monitoring required
• All Out - Maximum power output; performance depends on HPOP condition and its ability to supply sufficient volume to injectors

Street Fury is available for stock injectors only. All other files are available for stock or modified injector setups. If the build matches, this is the correct tune set to order for the Hydra on a 7.3L Powerstroke.

What To Include With Your Order

Custom tunes cannot be written without accurate build information. Provide the following in the order comments:

• Injector size - stock or modified (include flow rate and nozzle size if modified)

• Any additional modifications relevant to fueling or airflow

If ordering a new Hydra chip at the same time, leave the Hydra serial number field blank and note in the order comments that tunes need to be loaded on the new chip.

Tune Delivery and Installation

Tunes are delivered one of two ways - choose the option that works for the setup:

• Email delivery: Tunes are emailed within 48 hours. A Hydra chip and the free PHP software are required to load them. This is the fastest path to being up and running.
• Ship the chip: Send the Hydra chip to Gearhead and they will install the tunes. Buyer is responsible for shipping costs.

Avoid These Common Mistakes

• Ordering for an early 1999 7.3L Powerstroke - tunes are not available for that build date; verify the production date before ordering
• Ordering without a Hydra chip - these are tune files only; the PHP Hydra chip is required and sold separately
• Running boost foolers with these tunes - boost foolers must be removed before use; failure to remove them affects tune performance
• Expecting revisions after 30 days without additional cost - revisions are included for 30 days; after that a separate revision package is required
