The device is used to load performance tunes (or custom tunes via a tuning dealer) into your truck’s PCM (Powertrain Control Module) without removing it — making installation much simpler than some older style “chip” or ECU-swap tuning. Pre-loaded “dyno-proven” tunes and the ability to store up to 10 custom tune files (from SCT-authorized tuners). If your vehicle deviates significantly from stock (big aftermarket modifications, custom turbo upgrades, etc.), pre-loaded tunes may not be safe — custom tuning by a qualified SCT tuner is then required. The device is often flagged as not legal in certain jurisdictions (or for sale to states with strict emissions laws, e.g. CA) because some tunes might affect emissions compliance. As with any tuning device — improper use or loading a tune not built for your truck’s specs can cause engine/transmission issues.
